Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract optional
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • Additional sugar for rolling optional

Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

    Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

    Mix Dry Ingredients:

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

    Cream Butter and Sugar:

    • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and white sugar until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.

    Add Wet Ingredients:

    • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using). Mix until well combined.

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:

    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing just until combined. Add the milk and mix until the dough comes together.

    Form Cookies:

    • Scoop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough and roll into balls. If desired, roll the balls in additional sugar before placing them on the prepared baking sheets.

    Bake:

    • Place the dough balls about 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your palm.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers should be set but still soft.

    Cool:

    • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

    Decorate (Optional):

    • Once cooled, you can decorate the cookies with icing, sprinkles, or any other desired toppings.

    Tips

    • Ensure your butter is softened but not melted for the best texture.
    • Do not overbake the cookies; they should be slightly soft when removed from the oven.
    • For even baking, rotate the baking sheet halfway through the cooking time.
    • Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh and soft.
Enjoy your delicious and classic sugar cookies!
